What to Expect After Hernia Surgery
Hernia surgeries, whether performed via open or laparoscopic techniques, typically last between 1 to 1.5 hours. Recovery from anesthesia usually takes about 75 to 90 minutes, during which you will be closely monitored until you are ready to be moved back to your bed.
Pain Management
Significant pain is typically not expected following inguinal hernia surgery. Most patients report feeling very comfortable post-surgery, often surprised by the minimal discomfort experienced, especially when resting. Pain management strategies, including medications, will be tailored to your needs to ensure your comfort as you recover.
Nutrition and Hydration
Approximately 3-4 hours post-surgery, you will be encouraged to start hydrating with water and gradually introduce liquid foods. By the evening of the surgery day, we aim to provide a normal meal, assuming no complications arise. This gradual reintroduction of food helps to ensure your digestive system resumes its normal function in a controlled manner.
Discharge and Home Care Instructions
Patients are typically ready for discharge the following day. At discharge, you will receive a prescription for any necessary medications, detailed written instructions for home care, and a discharge form that includes your follow-up appointment date and time. The instructions will cover essential aspects such as dietary recommendations, showering, mobility, and restrictions on lifting weights, exercising, driving, and returning to work. It is crucial to follow these guidelines to prevent complications and promote healing.
You will also receive contact information for our clinic to ensure you can easily reach us with any questions or concerns that might arise after you leave the hospital.
Wound Care
In most cases, the surgical wound does not require a dressing and can be left open, promoting better healing. Stitches used are typically self-dissolving and do not require removal, which simplifies your post-operative care. However, keep the wound area clean and dry, and follow specific instructions provided by your surgeon regarding wound care.
Travel and Follow-Up
Patients from foreign countries are generally advised that they can safely travel back to their home countries two days after the surgery, provided there are no complications. Regular follow-up care is crucial, whether with us or your local medical provider, to ensure proper healing and to manage any potential issues promptly.
